Nov 30, 2021 · I started a build of a SJ 327 block with an older aftermarket 3.48” SJ crank. I was going to run it in my 57 with ported aluminum speedway motors camel hump heads, modified to take a staggered valve cover, and a heavily worked factory intake. I was hoping to squeak into the 12s with it. The problem with adding bigger fuelie style cylinder heads like the 461 or 462 is that, while these heads increase airflow over a stock 283 head, this also increases the combustion chamber volume. Those double-hump heads generally have 64cc chambers. The stock 283 used a 58cc chamber.The very FIRST double hump, camel hump, FI, "fuelie" (whatever you want to call it) head was installed on the 1961 315hp/283 Corvette fuel injected engine. THAT WAS THE ONLY ENGINE (at that time) TO GET THE HEADS WITH THE NOW FAMOUS 2 HUMPS on the ends of the head. The biggest problem that I see with the double hump heads is that the intake port is too small with the new cams and "bigger" carbs. etc. If you build the engine just as chevrolet did, then you should be ok.
